You're just piggy-backing on UK/US forces and where they go anyway since you don't have enough of your own men to do anything major, so you can pick when and where you want to fight and if you lose, it's not a big deal cuz you're probably not gonna get invaded as a result (though the Japanese may land in New Guinea). What Canada and Australia are for is learning how to micromanage combat without failure being a problem.
I tried isolated minors at first, such as Canada and Australia, but learned almost nothing by speed 5ing it to 1940 just so I could send a quarter million men to Europe in barges. Plus you have enough industrial capacity to hold your airspace and then some, as well as a navy that can via for control of your personal lake. The warfare you see is generally about as violent as a board game. You get to roll with the big boys, helping Germany fight France and the Soviets. Hearts of Iron IV (often abbreviated as HOI4) is a complex World War 2 strategy game, where a player leads their nation through World War 2. You have smaller Baltic countries to practice on before war breaks out, such as Yugoslavia and Greece. You have overseas holdings, but they're right across the Mediterranean.
